Handmade Alley An Indie Craft Podcast

So being a crafter here in the St. Louis area I have been privileged to meet a lot of other awesome crafters and artists. We are a tight knit crafting community here and we support each other in all that we do. With that in mind I would like to introduce you to two of my crafty friends. Andrea Lammle of Zenbot Designs is my sister nerd.  We like to talk all things nerdy including Dr. Who and we fight over whom Cap'n Fancy Pants (Nathan Fillion) belongs to.  I've know Holly Schroeder of South City Studio a little longer.  We have both been members of the St. Louis Craft Mafia for some years.  She is one of the sweetest people I know, but she definitely has a saucy side to her you would never expect.

The ladies are venturing together down the internet road of podcasts and decided to talk on a subject they both know well.... crafts and the crafting community!  Their first podcast is awesome!  It is chock full of advice and tips for both craft show vendors and their customers.  It talks about craft show etiquette including the Hierarchy Of Spillage, which is when a customer comes into a booth with a drink or food and tries to set it down or sloshes it around not even considering that it might spill or drip onto the handmade goods that took a lot of time and effort to make.  There are some other great tips, like being mindful of your language around your customers and not dropping the f-bomb and that the details of your birth story are probably better reserved for a private setting. The last one goes for customers and vendors alike.

The email address mentioned in the podcast is not correct.  Please send emails for Handmade Alley to handmadealleypodcast@gmail.com.

They would love to hear stories relative to their first episode and they are welcoming suggestions for new topics. To hear more of their sound helpful advice and to leave your stories and new topic suggestions go to Handmade Alley and listen to their podcast.  Make sure to follow them on Facebook and on Twitter @HandmadeAlley to catch upcoming podcasts.

Thanks!

Facebook's New Fan Page Promotion

So Facebook has come up with a new option for those with fan or business pages to help them promote their businesses.  There is a lot of confusion on this as all kinds of information is crawling around the web.  My friend Lori Peterson of  Lori Peterson Photography shared this link with me which helped to clear it up.

https://www.facebook.com/help/promote

Here is what it says (this is via Facebook from the link above)

If I don't promote my post, will the people who like my page still see it?

Nothing has changed about how your posts are shared with the people who like your Page.

A lot of activity happens on Facebook and most people only see some of it in their news feeds. They may miss things when they’re not on Facebook, or they may have a lot of friends and Pages, which results in too much activity to show all of it in their news feed.

If you don’t promote your post, many of the people connected to your Page may still see it. However, by promoting a post, you’re increasing its potential reach so an even larger percentage of your Page audience and the friends of those interacting with your post will see it.

I was somewhat excited about the possibility of being able to promote giveaways or upcoming craft shows.  Well that is not a possibility yet for me.  Seems you have to at least 400 likes in order to promote.  So I am going to be on a campaign to get more likes.  If you haven't liked my  Facebook page yet please do so.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion out there.  I am not totally thrilled by this change, but I am hoping maybe the promotion campaign might help.

Senora Muertos Is Now Selling Vintage Items

My love for things vintage has taken over. I have a love for all things 1940's and 1950's, but can appreciate the 60's and 70's and even some 80's. I grew up going to thrift stores and yard sales as that is where a majority of our toys and clothing came from. So I know a bargain when I see one! LOL! My kids are also growing up to appreciate a good deal. I have been taking them to thrift stores and yard sales as newborns and on. They both get excited when we go and they both know what to look for, condition, price, etc. They are going to be pros soon! Well my love for vintage has driven me to decide to share my knowledge and love by selling vintage items in my etsy store

.
Here a few items that I recently listed. Be on the look out for many more.

Vintage Martini or Cocktail Shaker in Yellow

Mid Century or Modern White Cats (Eames like design)

Vintage Bride and Groom Salt and Pepper Shakers

As always thanks for reading my blog and be sure to check back for more!

The 8-Bit bar in St. Louis

The 8-Bit bar in St. Louis, has kicked off it's Kickstarter Pledge.  What is a Kickstarter Pledge you ask?  Well basically an organization, company, not for profit, etc. comes up with a certain amount or financial goal they need to kickstart or open their establishment.  People then donate a certain amount of money in exchange for some type of service or goods offered by the organization.  Money does not exchange hands unless the organization reaches it's financial goal.

So was is 8-Bit bar?  Here is how they describe themselves on their Kickstarter Pledge page.

We came up with the idea for the 8-Bit Bar when we decided St. Louis doesn't need another ordinary bar. How many bars are there here for those of us who would rather watch Battlestar Galactica than a football game? None that we could think of.

We decided that St. Louis nerds and geeks NEED a place to congregate and know that they are in good company- the company of fellow individuals who share an interest in the less mainstream pursuits, such as science fiction, technology, video games, anime, intellectual pursuits, and almost anything else "geeky" one can imagine.

Our dream is to create a social hub that brings people together in an environment that enables them to use their common interests and passions to build relationships with the business, the community and each other.

That said, in the spirit of fostering such a community, we welcome any and all ideas, suggestions, and help in realizing this dream of ours. We want YOU to be a part of creating this safe-haven for anyone and everyone who relishes in the unusual, the imaginative, and the geeky.

Special Abilities
  • 20 Beers on Draft - $3.00 PBRs Always Available
  • Over 180 Barchievements to experience with rewards at milestones
  • Create Your Own Dining Experience by Bringing in Food From Wherever You Want
  • 15-20 Classic Arcade Games - Think Ms. Pacman, Galaga and Donkey Kong with a consistent high-score leader board in the bar and online
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • TONS of Power Outlets for Your Electricty-Hungry Portable Devices
  • Weekly Presentations from Local Scientists, Researchers, and Professors
  • A Free Library of Books For You to Enjoy
  • A Selection of Awesome Board Games - Think Chess, Settlers of Catan, Risk, Puerto Rico, Battlestar Galactica, Munchkin, and Game of Thrones
  • Partnerships With Local Theatre, Comedy Troupes and Cultural Institutions
  • Parnterships With Local Universities
  • Partnerships With Local Restaurants
So you get the idea!  Super freaking cool right???  Go help them reach their financial goal by going to the Kickstarter Pledge page today and make a pledge!   Think of watching Star Wars or Lord of the Rings while playing a game of Magic or D&D all while having a beer.

Don't forget to spread the word too!

I sincerely  hope they reach their goal!
